Reducing Health Care Costs Starts with You
Everyday decisions that help you feel better and work better - and save money
Prevention. You’ve heard it before. And, we all know the usual strategies – eat healthier, move more, don’t use tobacco – that sort of thing. But what does prevention mean for you? And what could prevention mean to you’s overall health benefit costs?
Here are a few stats that may surprise you:
- 86% of the nation’s $2.7 trillion in annual health care expenditures are for chronic physical and mental health conditions.1
- 80% of premature heart disease, stroke, and diabetes can be prevented.2
- 40% of cancer can be prevented.3
No one can ignore this kind of evidence.
This means that the more you engage in preventive, healthy habits like eating whole foods, exercising, and ending bad habits, you lower your chances of preventable disease.
- A healthier you = a healthier workplace. Less stress, more fun, more energy.
- A healthier workplace = less healthcare claims on our insurance plan.
- Less claims costs = our company’s health insurance rates are more stable and sustainable.
On top of that, rates at a healthy workplace increase at a much slower pace than those of an unhealthy workplace. After all, it’s been proven that a 1% reduction in weight, blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol risk factors would save $83 to $103 annually in medical costs per person.4
So, next time your colleague picks up a bag of almonds instead of a bag of chips for a snack, you might even want to give them a high-five and say, “Thanks for keeping my health insurance costs down!” Because when we help each other be healthy, we all win in the end.
